Blood

TermDefinition
Referral written order from a primary care physician (PCP) that allows a patient to see a specialist or receive certain medical services
Phlebotomy A procedure in which a needle is used to take blood from a vein, usually for laboratory testing
Leukocytes White blood cells
Erythrocytes red blood cells
Plasma the liquid component of blood
Thrombocytes (Platelets) cell fragments in the blood that help stop bleeding and form clots
Hemoglobin inside red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to tissues and organs in the body and carries carbon dioxide back to the lungs.
Sickle Cell Disease An inherited disease in which the red blood cells have an abnormal crescent shape, block small blood vessels, and do not last as long as normal red blood cells
Leukemia blood cancer
Hematocrit the percentage of red blood cells in a person's total blood volume
Anemia a medical condition characterized by a lower-than-normal level of red blood cells (erythrocytes) or hemoglobin in the blood
Polycythemia a condition characterized by an abnormally high number of red blood cells in the bloodstream
Cannula a thin, hollow tube that is inserted into a body cavity or vessel for various medical purposes
Complete Blood Count (CBC) a medical test that measures the number and types of cells in your blood
Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) blood test that measures eight substances in your blood to assess your body's metabolism, fluid balance, and kidney function
Lipid Panel blood test that measures the levels of various fats (lipids) in the bloodstream
Saturated Fat a type of dietary fat. It is one of the unhealthy fats
Unsaturated Fat the "good fat"
Hypercholesterolemia A condition where the body has unusually high level of fats in the blood
Plaque (Cholesterol) An semi-hardened accumulation of substances (usually cholesterol) from fluids that bathe an area
Blood-borne Pathogen a microorganism, such as a virus or bacteria, that can cause disease in humans through contact with blood or other bodily fluids
Universal Precautions a standard set of guidelines to prevent the transmission of bloodborne pathogens from exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials
Brachiocephalic Vein a large vein in the upper body that carries deoxygenated blood from the head, neck, and arms back to the heart
Subclavian Vein a large vein that carries oxygen-depleted blood from the upper body back to the heart
Axillary Vein a large vein that carries blood from the upper limb, armpit, and lateral thorax to the heart
Greater Cephalic Vein a superficial vein in the upper limb that runs from the hand to the shoulder
Median Cubital Vein a vein in the elbow that carries blood from the cephalic vein to the basilic vein (common draw cite)
Basilic Vein a large superficial vein of the upper limb that helps drain parts of the hand and forearm
