| Alveoli | tiny air sacs of the lungs which allow for rapid gaseous exchange |
| Anoxia | an absence or deficiency of oxygen reaching the tissues |
| Antitussive | a medication often recommended for the treatment of cough |
| Aphonia | loss of voice |
| Asbestosis | a chronic lung disease caused by inhaling asbestos fibers |
| Asphyxia | a condition arising when the body is deprived of oxygen |
| Asthma | inflammation and muscle tightening around the airways, which makes it harder to breathe |
| Atelectasis | the collapse of a lung or part of a lung |
| Asphyxia | condition where the body either doesn't get enough oxygen to continue normal function or has too much carbon dioxide to function properly |
| Asthma | a chronic disease in which the bronchial airways in the lungs become narrow and swollen, making it difficult to breach |
| Bradypnea | an abnormally slow breathing rate |
| Bronchondilator | a type of drug that causes small airways in the lungs to open up |
| Bronchorrhea | an excessive pulomonary fluid with mucus |
| Bronchoscopy | the visual examination of the bronchi using a bronchoscope |
| Brochospasm | a contraction of the muscular coat of the bronchial tubes |
| Cheyene-Stokes Respiration | an atypical pattern of breathing involving deep breathing followed by shallow breathing |
| Croup | an infection of the upper airways that causes breathing difficulty and barking cough |
| Cyanosis | a bluish color in the skin, lips, and nail beds caused by a shortage of oxygen in the blood |
| Cystic Firbosis | a genetic condition that changes a protein in the body |
| Dyspnea | Difficult, painful breathing or shortness of breath |
| Emphysems | a disorder affecting the alveoli of the lungs |
| Endotraceal Intubation | a medical procedure in which a tube is placed into te windpipe through the mouth or nose |
| Epistaxis | nasal bleeding of any cause |
| Hemoptysis | coughing up blood or bloody mucus from your respiratory tract |
| Hemothorax | a serious condition in which blood collects in your pleural space |
| Hypercapnia | when you have too much carbon dioxide in your bllod |
| Hyperpnea | breathing in more air than you normally do |
| Hypoxemia | low levels of oxygen in your blood |
| Laryngectomy | a surgical procedure to remove part or all of the larynx, the area of the throat that contains your vocal cords |
| Laryngitis | swelling and irritation of the voice box |
| Laryngoscopy | swelling and irritation of the voice box |
| Laryngospasm | a condition in which your vocal cords suddenly spasm |
| Otolaryngologist | a doctor who has special training in diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose, and throat |
| Pertussis | a serious bacterial infection of the lungs and breathing tubes that spreads easily |
| Pharyngitis | an inflammation of the pharynx, resulting in a sore throat |
| Phlegm | a more than normal amount of thick mucus made by the cells lining the upper airways and lungs |
| Pneumonia | an infection that affects one or both lungs |
| Pneumothorax | an abnormal collection of air in the space between the thin layer of tissue that covers the lungs and the chest cavity |
| Pulmonologist | a doctor who has special training in diagnosing and treating diseases of the lungs |
| Pulse Oximeter | an electronic device that measures the saturation of oxygen carried in your red blood cells |
| Sleep Apnea | when you stop breathing while asleep or have alost no airflow |
| Tachypnea | rapid breathing |
| Thoracentesis | removal of fluid from the pleural cavity through a needle inserted between the ribs |
| Thoracotomy | an incision made in the chest wall to acces the contents of the thoracic cavity |
| Tracheostomy | an opening surgically created through the neck into the trachea to allow air to fill the lungs |
| Tuberculosis | a bacterial infection |
