| feudalism | a form of political organization that is characterized by a relationship between a lord and a vassal where the lord exchanges land for military service from the vassal |
| fief | a piece of land or other rights given to a vassal by a lord or monarch in exchange for services or loyalty |
| manor | a unit of land, originally a feudal lordship, consisting of a lord's demesne and lands rented to tenants. |
| monotheism | the belief in one god |
| Patriarch | a religious leader in the Eastern Orthodox Church |
| Pope | head of the Roman Catholic Church |
| schism | a division over a difference of opinion, generally used in the case of split over religious differences |
| scholar-gentry | class of Chinese officials who passes civil service exams to work in the bureaucracy |
| arabesque | decorative style that uses intertwining plants, abstract curvilinear motifs, and sometimes animal and figural outlines to create an intricate pattern |
| caliph | the chief Muslim civil and religious ruler, regarded as the successor of Muhammad |
| manorialism | a political, economic, and social system in medieval Europe that defined the relationship between landowning lords and the peasants who worked the land |
| monastery | a building or buildings occupied by a community of monks living under religious vows. |
| monks | a member of a religious community of men typically living under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. |
| mosque | a Muslim place of worship. |
| samurai | a member of a powerful military caste in feudal Japan, especially a member of the class of military retainers of the daimyos. |
