Fluid & Electrolyte
Module 9
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Fluid Balance | Adjusting fluid output to equal fluid intake |
| Fluid Imbalance | Total volume of water in the body |
| Body Volume | Within one of the fluid compartments (has increased or decreased beyond normal limits) |
| Body Fluid Volumes | Determined by total body weight of individial |
| Fat content of the body | More fat = less water |
| Gender | Female body has 10% less than male |
| Age | Newborns water approx. 80% of total body weight, older adults water per pound decreases |
| Body Fluid compartments | Extracellular fluid and intracellular fluid |
| Extracellular Fluid (ECF) | Water stored outside cell, surrounds, and transports substanceto and from cell |
| Intravascular (plasma) | Liquid part of blood |
| Interstitial fluid | Surrounds the cells |
| Transcellular fluid | Lymph, joint fluids, cerebrospinal fluids, eye humors |
| Intracellular Fluid (ICF) | Water stored inside cell |
| ICF | Largest fluid compartment, serves as a solvent to facillitate IC chemical reactions |
| Fluid Output Organs | Kidneys - urine, lungs - water vapor, skin - diaphoressis, intestines - feces |
| Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) | Released from pituitary gland |
