TermDefinition
Placenta previa When the placenta is partially or completely over the cervix, causing painless bleeding, usually occurring in 3rd trimester.
Placenta abruptio When the placenta prematurely rips from the uterine wall before delivery, causing painful bleeding in the 3rd trimester.
Pre-eclampsia S&S Dizziness, headache, swelling (Hands, feet, face, ankles), vision disturbances, hypertension
Steps of Neonatal resuscitation 1. Dry, Stimulate, Warm, position for good airway 2. Blow-by O2 3. BVM 4. CPR
Compression and Ventilation rates for Neonate Compression: 3 to 1 Ventilations: 1 every 3 seconds
When to start Neonate CPR? When heart rate is under 60 bpm
Why can vomiting and diarrhea be significant in Infants? Because it can lead to shock from severe dehydration.
How would you check circulation in Children 6 or under? Use cap refill
In Infants/Children what is Grunting and restlessness a sign of? Early sign of respiratory distress
How long to febrile seizures last? Should be less than 30 minutes
ALTE Apparent Life Threatening Emergency. When infant is found apneic, cyanotic, unresponsive but then resumes breathing with stimulation.
How to manage ALTE? Transport immediately and watch airway
What is Croup? An upper airway virus that can be identified by a 'barking cough'
What is Epiglottitis? A lower airway infection that can be identified by drooling, sore throat, difficulty swallowing and tripod position
What does APGAR represent? Appearance, Pulse, Grimace(irritability), Activity/Muscle tone, Respirations
How does APGAR scoring work? 0 = no reaction 1 = weak reaction 2 = strong reaction
How to manage a breech delivery with a prolapsed cord as an EMT? Transport immediately in a downward dog position, or hips up position for the mother and supply O2 to her if needed.
Causes of supine hypotensive syndrome When the mother lays down and the infant puts pressure on the vena cava restricting the hearts ability to adequately fill back uo with blood.
