Nationalism and Unification

TermDefinition
Ideology a system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy.
Autonomy the right of self-government
Universal Manhood Suffrage voting rights to all adult male citizens
Agitator a person who urges others to protest or rebel
Radicals a person who supports complete political or social reform.
Louis Phillipe last Bourbon King of France (1830-1848). Nicknamed the “citizen king” because he was chosen king by the people.
Recession a period of temporary economic decline which trade and industrial activity are reduced.
Napoleon III President (1848-1852) and Emperor (1846-1873) of France. Napoleon’s nephew.
Socialism a social theory that supports the idea that economic activity should be beneficial and regulated by the community.
Simon Bolivar A South American general/politician who liberated Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, and Bolivia from 1817-1825
Toussaint L'Overture former slave and founding father of Haiti. Leader of Haiti from 1797-1802.
Father Miguel Hidalgo a Mexican Catholic priest who led a War of Independence. Considered the Father of Mexico.
Jose de San Martin a South American general who liberated Argentina, Chile and Peru from 1812-1822.
Proclaim to announce officially or publicly
Otto von Bismarck German prime minister who unified Germany. Nicknamed the "Iron Chancellor".
Realpolitik a political idea that policies should be more practical rather than idealistic
Annex to add to something larger
Kulturkampf a conflict in Germany for power between the Catholic Church and Otto von Bismarck
Social Welfare a system of public programs that helps people with their foo, shelter, education, healthcare, or work needs
Giuseppe Garibaldi Italian revolutionary and general who united the Italian states and established the kingdom of Italy
Emigration the act of leaving one's own country
