Ch:6 French Revolution key terms:World history

TermDefinition
Bourgeoisie: townspeople who became comfortable through business or trade
Ancien régime: French for "former regime" and refers to the old system of government and society in France
First Estate: consisted of the clergy, who owned a lot of land and didn’t pay taxes
Second Estate made up of the nobility, didn’t pay taxes
Third Estate: poor,agricultural people before the French Revolution, they were influenced by Abbé Sieyés’s ideas
Legitimacy: A principle from 1814 by foreign minister Prince Metternich that said rightful monarchs should return to their thrones to keep peace in Europe after Napoleon’s defeat.
sans-culotte: after the revolution, men of the lower classes called themselves citoyens(citizens)
Coup: referred to as 18 Brumaire after its date on the French Revolutionary calendar, When Napoleon took power by overthrowing the French Directory
Conscription Compulsory military service
Balance of power ● when a nation or group has enough social, political, and economic strength to prevent another nation or group from controlling them.
guillotine: Became France’s official method of execution In 1791 after Joseph Ignace Guillotin suggested it to the government that state executions be carried out "by means of machine."
Jacobins radical & powerful political group during the French Revolution
Plebiscite a direct vote by the people on a question of general principle or policy
Sufferage The right to vote
Deficit spending a government spends more on programs than it takes in revenue, then has to borrow or print money to make up the difference.
Nationalism a feeling of loyalty to one’s country
