| strength | strength is a must -> inadequate strength can lead to faster fatigue and make you more prone to injury |
| stamina | balanced diet, cardiovascular excercise and proper breathing techniques |
| breathing | proper breating helps keep the therapist relaxed, pace massage movements, fuel the muscles and keep us cool |
| stability | our lower extremities provide our stable base -> stability is the prerequisite to balance |
| balance | when you are balanced, less energy is expended during the massage. your center of gravity is an inch or two below your belly button |
| groundedness/centeredness | refers to mental, emotional, and physical states of the therapist |
| what are the 2 foot stances? | the bow stance (archer stance) used in effleurage;the warrior stance (horse stance) used with petrissage |
| client positioning | promotes client comfort and relaxation through proper body alignment;addresses medical and health issues because some conditions may require the client to be postitioned a certain way |
| four major client positions are: | prone, supine, side laying, and seated |
| prone position | horizontal position laying face downward;most commonly supported areas are anterior ankles and head-neck complex |
| supine position | lying horizontally on back;most commonly supported areas are posterior cervical region and posterior knees |
| side lying position | aka lateral recumbant postionpreffered by pregnant clients and older clients. may lay and left or right side |
| seated position | client is seatedmay sit in ordinary chair or massage chair |
| beginning prone, ending supine | for back pain, allows sinus drainage and allows for massage of neck due to lying prone |
| beginning supine, ending prone | eye contact can be made, allows back to be massaged last |
| draping | covering the body with cloth |
| purpose of draping | provide professional atmosphere, emotional privacy, offers warmth, provides access to individual parts if the body |
| 3 basic rules of draping | follow state or local laws, honor clients individual request for draping, massage therapist also has to be comfortable |
