| contraindication | situation in which a treatment or an action is inappropriate |
| full weight-bearing (FWB) | able to stand on both legs. |
| gait belt | belt placed around the patient's waist to assist in ambulation |
| manual patient handling | moving a patient by hand or bodily force, including pushing , pulling, carrying, holding, or supporting the patient or a body part. |
| mechanical lift | manually operated hydraulic lift, electrically ( or batter-) operated lift or ceiling-mounted lift. used to transfer dependent or heavy patients from one surface to another |
| non weight-bearing (NWB) | unable to stand or walk on one or both leg |
| paralysis | loss or impairment of the skin seen in most bariatric patients |
| paresis | weakness of an extremity |
| partial weight-bearing (PWB) | unable to bear full weight on one or both legs. |
| pivot | to twist or in a swiveling motion |
| sitting (lateral) transfer | moving patient from one surface to another with patient sitting |
| sliding board | plastic or wooden board that is about two feet long with a slippery surface. used for a sitting lateral transfer |
| standing transfer | patient is moved from one surface to another while standing |
| weight-bearing (WB) | having the ability to stand on one or both legs |
