| Term | Definition |

| Contraindication | Situations in which something is not indicated, inappropriate, or potentially dangerous. |
| Full Weight-Bearing (FWB) | The ability to stand on both legs. |
| Gait Belt | Belt placed around the patients waist to assist in ambulation. |
| Manual Patient Handling | Moving a patient by hand or bodily force, including pushing, pulling, carrying, holding, or supporting the patient or a patients body part. |
| Mechanical Lift | Manually operated hydraulic lift, electrically ( or battery-) operated lift, or ceiling - mounted lift. Used to transfer dependent or heavy patients from one surface to another. |
| Nonweight-Bearing (NWB) | |
| Paralysis | Inability to move of any extremity. |
| Paresis | Weakness of an extremity |
| Parial Weight-Bearing (PWB) | |
| Pivot | Turn the entire body as one unit to transfer. |
| Sitting (Lateral) Transfer | The patient sits throughout the transfer, such as when a sliding board is used. |
| Sliding Board | A plastic or wooden board about two feet long that has slippery surface. |
| Standing Transfer | The patient stands during the transfer with the help of one or two nursing assistants . |
| Weight-Bearing (WB) | The ability to stand on one or both legs. |
