| contraindication | Situation in which a treatment or an action is inappropriate |
| full weight-bearing (FWB) | The ability to stand on both legs is called full weight-bearing (FWP) |
| gait belt | it is used to assist with ambulation |
| manual patient handling | Moving a patient by hand or bodily force including pushing, pulling, carrying, holding, or supporting the patient or a patient body part. |
| mechanical lift | used to transfer dependent or heavy patients from one surface to another. |
| nonweight-bearing (NWB) | Unable to stand or walk on one or both legs. |
| paralysis | inability to move any extremity |
| paresis | weakness of an extremity |
| parial weight-bearing (PWB) | unable to bear full weight on one or both legs |
| pivot | when the patient is standing, pivot ( turn the entire body as one unit) to transfer. |
| sitting (lateral) transfer | The patient sits throughout the transfer, such as when a sliding board is used |
| sliding board | a plastic or wooden board about two feet long that has a slippery surface.It is used for a sitting (lateral ) transfer. |
| standing transfer | the patient stands during transfer with the help of one or two nursing assistant |
| weight-bearing (WB) | The ability to stand on one or both legs |
