Ch. 16 Mobility: Transfer Skills

| contraindication | Situations in which something is not indicated, inappropriate, or potentially dangerous. |
| full weight-bearing (FWB) | Able to stand on both legs |
| gait belt | Belt placed around the patients waist to assist in ambulation |
| manual patient handling | Moving a patient by hand or bodily force, including pushing, pulling, carrying, holding, or supporting the patient or a body part |
| mechanical lift | Manually operated hydraulic lift, electrically ( or battery) operated lift, or ceiling-mounted lift. Used to transfer dependent or heavy patients from one surface to another |
| nonweight-bearing (NWB) | Unable to stand or walk on one or both legs. |
| paralysis | Inability to move of any extremity |
| paresis | weakness of an extremity |
| parial weight-bearing (PWB) | unable to bear full weight on one or both legs |
| pivot | to twist or turn in a swiveling motion |
| sitting (lateral) transfer | moving patient from one surface to another with patient sitting |
| sliding board | plastic or wooden board that is about two feet long with a slippery surface. |
| standing transfer | Patient is moved from one surface to another while standing. |
| weight-bearing (WB) | Having the ability to stand on one or both legs |
