Chapter 16: Transfer Skills Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Contraindication The situation in which something is not indicated,inappropriate,or potentially dangerous.
full weight-bearing (FWB) The ability to stand on both legs.
gait belt Assist with Ambulation.
manual patient handling moving a patient by hand or bodily force, including pushing, pulling, carrying, holding, or supporting the patient or a patient's body part.
mechanical lift used to transfer dependent or heavy patients from one surface to another.
nonweight-bearing (NWB) unable to stand or walk on one or both legs.
paralysis (inability to move) of any extremity.
paresis Which is a weakness of an extremity.
parial weight-bearing (PWB) unable to bear full weight on one or both legs.
pivot when the patient is standing( turn the entire body as one unit) to transfer.
sitting (lateral) transfer The patient sits throughout the transfer, such a when a sliding board is used.
sliding board is a plastic or wooden broad about two feet long that has slippery surface. it is used for sitting.
standing transfer The patient stands during the transfer with the help of one or two nursing assistants.
weight-bearing (WB) having the ability to stand on one or both legs
