| pharaoh | the highest rulers of Ancient Egypt |
| pyramid | massive tomb for pharaohs |
| vizier | the person in charge of Ancient Egyptian government |
| dynasty | a family of rulers having the rights to rule passed down from generation to generation |
| Giza | the city where the Great Pyramid is located |
| hieroglyphics | symbols/pictures that represent sounds, ideas and words |
| The Old Kingdom | Egypt's first dynasty who are responsible for building the pyramids 2700-2200BC |
| The Middle Kingdom | time in history when pharaohs were no longer considered gods and egypt was united 2040BC |
| The New Kingdom | The Hyksos were finally defeated by the Egyptians; first woman pharoah ruled 1550-1070BC |
| black lands | fertile lands near the Nile River |
| red lands | cast desert on either side of the Nile River |
| Upper Egypt | the southern part of Egypt (it was known as Upper Egypt because it is higher in elevation) |
| Lower Egypt | the northern part of Egypt (it was much more fertile than Upper Egypt) |
| Delta | triangle shaped opening of a river into a body of water-finger like land strips within it. |
| mummy | body preserved through mummification |
| Papyrus | a crop that was used for "paper" |
| hierarchy | people are placed in a social class which is ranked by power |
| Cataract | rock formations in water that create rapids |
