Safety & Infection control
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| biohazard spill kit | spills in the lab should be cleaned up using this kit |
| chemical hazard | harmful or potentially harmful chemicals such as strong acids, preservatives etc |
| ergonomics | adjusting to perform a task safely for not only yourself but for the patient |
| types of allergen exposures | latex, rubber, gloves, bandages, paper tape, alcohol |
| R.A.C.E. | rescue, activate or alarm, contain, extinguish if possible |
| Class A | paper, cloth, wood |
| Class B | oils, grease, alcohol |
| Class C | electrical equipment |
| Class D | combustible metal |
| class A extinquisher | pressurized water, dry chemical |
| class B extinguisher | dry chemical, carbon dioxide |
| class C extinguisher | dry chemical, carbon dioxide, halon |
| class D extinguisher | sand or special extinguishing agent |
| GHS | globally harmonized system |
| globally harmonized system | nternationally agreed upon system for communicating chemical hazards |
| signal word | word or term typically DANGER or warning that is used on a label |
| NFPA | national fire protection agency |
| red quadrant of NFPA | shows fire hazard |
| blue quadrant of NFPA | shows hazard to health |
| yellow quadrant of NFPA | shows reactivity or stability hazard |
| white quadrant of NFPA | special hazards (the W) can not use water |
| HMIS | hazardous materials information system |
| SDS | safety data sheet |
| safety data sheets | lists all chemicals used at facility and information on each chemical from how to store it to exposure |
| emergency preparedness | training receive from employment on how to handle crisis |
| biohazard | biological substance that can threaten human health |
| needle stick safety & prevention act | mandates the use of safety devices |
| safety devices | AKA engineering control device |
| OPIM | other potentially infectious material |
| xposure control plan | protocol put in place that should be followed in case of exposure |
| sharps container | receptacle used to dispose of needles |
| P.A.S.S | pull, aim, squeeze, sweep |
| hazard statement | describes the nature & degree of chemical severity |
| HMIS | hazardous materials information system |
| hazardous materials information system | color bar codes this indicate risk (similar to NFPA) |
| needle-stick safety & prevention act | act passed mandating the use of safety needles |
| chain of infection | infectious agent, reservoir, portal of exit, mode of transmission, portal of entry, susceptible host |
| contact transmission | most frequent HAI direct or indirectly |
| droplet transmission | propelled short distances up to 3 feet |
| airborne transmission | small particles in air that carry pathogens eg TB chickenpox, eshingles |
| aerosols | fine mist of substances in air |
| vehicle borne | when you pick up bacteria (infection) from an object |
| vector borne | Living host carries and transmit disease (Think of Hector) |
| PPE | personal protective equipment |
| MRSA | Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus --resistant to certain antibiotics |
| VRE | Vancomycin resistant enterococci --resistant to certain antibiotics |
| C-diff | clostridium difficule--resistant to certain antibiotics |
| sepsis | life threatening condition of the body to infection can be transmitted person-person |
| fomite | inanimate object capable of spreading disease (AKA vehicle) |
| HAI | hospital acquired infection or healthcare associated infection |
| nosocomial | AKA HAI |
| hand hygiene | controlled step in preventing HAI's |
| blood-borne pathogen | microorganism like bacteria or a virus that is carried in the blood and can cause disease |
| donning | to put on PPE - |
| doffing | to take off PPE |
| standard precautions | past called universal precautions 1st level of protection wearing PPE to prevent exposure |
| isolation precaution | 2nd level of precaution is based on how the infection is transmitted is it airborne (wear mask) is it contact (wear gown) |
| OSHA | occupational safety & health administration |
| occupational safety & health administration | established to make sure healthcare workers have healthy working conditions enforcing standards, & training |
| Ergonomics | adjusting to perform a task safely for patent & technician |
