Unit 3-Age of Absolutism & Enlightenment Key Terms : World History Study!

TermDefinition
Absolutism : government ruled by a king or queen where they have total control
Divine Right : Belief that kings and queens get their power from God, and no one can question them
Monarch: King or Queen who rules a country
Cavaliers : the supporters of King Charles I during the English Civil War who were mainly wealthy
Roundheads : mockery term to call Parliamentary soldiers
Philosophe : Intellectuals of enlightenment who believed in using reason and questioning authority
Laissez-Faire : a policy that advocates for minimal government intervention\ In buissness activites
Enlightened Despot : European monarchs who, held power, that sought to include rational governance inspired by enlightenment ideas
Salon : social gatherings held in private homes for the socially famous
Natural Law : Basic rights everyone should have, like life, liberty, and property, rights you're born with
Social Contract : The idea people give up some freedoms to a government in exchange for safety and order
Spanish Armada : fleet to gain control over the English Channel and transport troops to England
Huguenots : French Protestants who lived in France during the Reformation period of the 16th and 17th centuries.
Balance of Power : Concept where political, social, and economic strengths are distributed to prevent any group from becoming too powerful
