| contraindication | situation in which a treatment or an action is inapproriate. |
| full weight- bearing | able to stand on both legs. |
| gait belt | belt placed around the patient's waist in ambulation. |
| manual patient handling | moving a patient by hand or bodily force, including pushing, piulling, carrying, holding, or supporting the patient or a body part. |
| mechanical lift | manually operated hydraulic lift, electrically operated lift, or ceiling-mounted lift. |
| nonweight-bearing (NWB) | unable to stand or walk on |
| paralysis | loss of the ability to move parts of the body |
| paresis | weakness of an extremity |
| parial weight-bearing (PWB) | unable to bear full weight on one or both legs. |
| pivot | to twist or turn in swiveling motion |
| sitting (lateral) transfer | moving patient from one surface to another while patient is sitting |
| sliding board | plastic or wooden board that is about 2 feet long with a slippery surface. Used for a sitting, lateral transfer. |
| standing transfer | patient is moved from one surface to another while standing. |
| weight-bearing (WB) | having the ability to stand on one or both legs |
