| Term | Definition |

| Contraindications | situations in which something is not indicated, inappropriate, or potentially dangerous |
| Full weight-bearing (FWB) | the ability to stand on both legs |
| Gait belt | belt placed around the patient´s waist to assist in ambulation |
| Manual patient handling | is moving a patient by hand or bodily force, including pushing, pulling, carrying, holding, or supporting the patient or a patient´s body part. |
| Mechanical lift | is used to transfer dependent or heavy patients from one surface to another. |
| Nonweight-bearing (NWB) | unable to stand or walk on one or both legs |
| Paralysis | inability to move; loss or impairment of the ability to move parts of the body. |
| Paresis | weakness of any extremity |
| Partial weight-bearing (PWB) | unable to bear full weight on one or both legs |
| Pivot | to twist or turn in a swiveling motion; turn the entire body as one unit |
| Sitting (lateral) transfer | the patient sits throughout transfer |
| Sliding board | a plastic or wooden board about two feet long that has a long slippery surface |
| Standing transfer | the patient stands during the transfer with the help of one or two nurse assistants |
| Weight-bearing (WB) | the ability to stand on one or both legs |
