Ch. 16 Transfer Skil

TermDefinition
contraindication situations in which something is not indicated, inappropriate, or potentailly dangerous.
full weight-bearing (FWB) the ability to stand on both legs.
gait belt when it is used to assist with ambulation.
manual patient handling moving a patient by hand or bodily force, including pushing, pulling, carrying, holding, or supporting the patient or patients body part.
mechanical lift may be a manually operated hydraulic lift, an electrically (or battery) operated lift, or a ceiling-mounted lift.
nonweight-bearing (NWB) cant put any weight on one or more extemity.
paralysis inability to move of any extremity,
paresis which is weakness of an extremity.
partial weight-bearing (PWB) if the patient has had hip surgery and cant put pressure on one of the lower extremitys.
pivot turn the entire body as one unit to transfer.
sitting (lateral) transfer the patient sits throughout the transfer, such as when a sliding board is used.
sliding board is a plastic or wooden board about two feet long that has a slippery surface. It is used for a sitting (lateral) transfer.
standing transfer the patient stands during the transfer with the help of one or two nursing assistances.
weight-bearing (WB) the ability to stand on one or both legs.
