Jizya Special tax paid by Dhimmis in Muslim ruled territory in exchange for religious freedom.
Umayyad Caliphate A family of caliphs ruling the Islamic world from 660 to 750 CE, known for expanding the Arab empire and creating a ruling class of Arab military aristocrates.
Abbasid Caliphate An Arab dynasty of caliphs who governed the Islamic world from 750 to 1260 CE when they were overthrown by the mongols.
Ulama Sunni and Shia Islamic religious scholars shaping the teachings of the Islamic world.
Sufism A understanding of the Islamic faith that saw the earthly success of the Islamic world a distraction, perusing interior life, looking to lessen the ego and achive spiritual unity with allah.
