| Preamble | the introductory part of a statute, deed, or the like states the following reasons and intent. |
| Congress | The national legislative body of the U.S. consists of the Senate, or upper house, and the House of Representatives, or lower house, as a continuous institution. |
| elastic clause | a statement in the U.S. Constitution (Article I, Section 8) granting Congress the power to pass all laws necessary and proper for carrying out the enumerated list of powers. |
| chief executive | the powers of the chief executive, as granted by the Constitution |
| federal judiciary | the judiciary of the federal government |
| judicial review | the courts are vested with the authority to determine the legitimacy of the acts of the executive and the legislative branches of government |
| Federalism | a system of government in which the same territory is controlled by two levels of government |
| supremacy clause | federal law takes precedence over any conflicting state law. |
