Age of Exploration: Key Terms (Vocabulary)

TermDefinition
Tariff: a tax charge on goods coming into a country, usually by the country's government where the goods are being sent.
Mercantilism : the economic system that dominated European commerce and trade from the 1600s to the late 1700s
Joint Stock Company a business where multiple people invest their money and agree to share the risks and rewards based on how much they put in.
Middle Passage: the middle part of the three-part journey taken by slave traders in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Zambo: word used to describe people of American Indian and African descent in Latin America.
Mestizos: a term that refers to persons of mixed-race background, more specifically to Mexicans with half-European and half-Indian ancestries.
Peonage: a system of labor that exploits a person by requiring that person to work off his or her debts, a goal that is rarely achieved.
Encomienda a system of labor employed by the country of Spain in the late 15th to late 18th centuries.
Viceroy: a government official who represents the home country in a colony, functioning like a governor
Conquistadores: Spanish adventurers who arrived in the Americas, aiming for personal gain and glory for Spain.
Sovereignty: a state's supreme authority to govern itself.
Monopoly: a company that is the only firm supplying a product or service to a market.
Missionary: a person who goes to a new area to promote their faith or help people in need
Circumnavigate: To circumnavigate something is to travel around it.
