| contraindication | Situations in which something is not indicated, inappropriate, or potentially dangerous |
| full weight-bearing (FWB) | Ability to stand on both legs |
| gait belt | Assist with ambulations |
| manual patient handling | Moving a patient by hand or bodily force |
| mechanical lift | Manually operated electrically operated lift that transfers dependent or heavy patients |
| nonweight-bearing (NWB) | Unable to place full weight on a paralyzed leg |
| paralysis | inability to move any extremity |
| paresis | Weakness of an extremity |
| parial weight-bearing (PWB) | unable to bear full weight on one or both legs |
| pivot | Turn the entire body as one unit |
| sitting (lateral) transfer | The patient sits throughout the transfer |
| sliding board | Plastic and wooden board about two feet long that has slippery surface |
| standing transfer | Patient is moved from one surface to another while standing |
| weight-bearing (WB) | Ability to stand on one or both legs |
