Dynasty Rule by family over a period of time.
Ziggurat Pyramid type building in Mesopotamia with a temple at the top.
Mesopotamia Greek word meaning “land between the rivers”, also known as the cradle of civilization.
Hammurabi's Code First written laws; "An Eye for an Eye"
Cuneiform First writing system. Found in Mesopotamia.
Pharoah Egyptian King also believed to be a God.
Polytheism The belief in many gods.
Monotheism The belief in one God
Hieroglyphics Egyptian writing system based on pictures representing ideas and words.
Civilization an advanced state of development of a society as judged by such things as having a system of government and laws, using a written language, and keeping written records
Ancient Egypt (3000-2000 BCE) an early river valley civilization established on the Nile River
Indus River Valley (2500-1700 BCE) an early river valley civilization located in the present-day countries of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India that included the cities Mohenjo-daro and Harappa
River Valley the area of land nearby and parallel to a river
Neolithic Revolution (starting in 10,000 BCE) a turning point in history that changed the way Paleolithic people lived their lives. People shifted from hunting and gathering for food to agriculture. Instead of living as nomads, people settled down in permanent settlements.
Irrigation the act of supplying water to land or crops
Shang China (3950-1500 BCE) an early river valley civilization in China established on the Huang He (Yellow) River
Middle Kingdom the Chinese Empire: originally so called from its supposed location in the center of the earth.
Nomad People that are always on the move (For example: Paleolithic people)
Fertile Crescent Named for its rich soils, the Fertile Crescent, often called the “cradle of civilization,” is found in the Middle East.
Empire A group of many different lands under one ruler.
