These are the vocabulary words and definitions for Unit 1 - The First Civs

TermDefinition
Paleolithic Era an era of history (2.5 million BCE to 10,000 BCE) when humans first appeared. Known as the Old Stone Age
Nomadic moving from place to place. Never staying in one place for a long time.
Historical Context background information that helps explain what led to a historical event or time period
Neolithic Revolution The slow change from hunting and gathering to agriculture, when humans stopped being nomadic and started living in permanent settled communities.
Fertile Crescent an area of good farmland found in the Middle East stretching from Egypt to Mesopotamia
City-State cities that governed themselves and the countryside around the city.
Sumer the most famous of the city-states in Mesopotamia. They made great contributions to mathematics and literature.
Hammurabi's Code oldest written legal code
Cuneiform The world's first system of writing
Rosetta Stone a stone tablet written in 3 languages that allowed hieroglyphics to be translated into Greek.
Turning Point a moment that marks a significant change
Social Hierarchy a ranking of people in society based on wealth and status
Point of View perspective from which a story is told
Geographic Context where an event happened and why it happened there.
Adapt to become adjusted to new conditions
modify to make changes to something
