Geography/Map Skills

TermDefinition
Geography the study of the world, its people, and the landscapes they create
Physical Geography the study of the world's physical features such as landforms, bodies of water, climates, soils and plants
Human Geography the study of the world's people, communities, and landscapes
Meteorology the study of the world with one or more common features distinguishing it from surrounding areas
Region a part of the world with one or more common features distinguishing it from surrounding areas
Cartography the science of making maps
Map a FLAT drawing that shows part of the Earth's surface
Landscape the human and physical features that make a place unique
Globe a spherical(round) model of the entire planet
Equator imaginary line that circles the globe halfway between the North and South Poles. It separates the Earth into a northern and southern hemisphere
Prime Meridian imaginary line that runs through Greenwich, England and represents 0 degrees longitude
Island body of land surrounded by water
Hemisphere the 2 halves of the globe that are divided by the equator
Compass Rose a map symbol that shows which way north, south, east, and west lie on a map
Scale represents the distance between two points on a map
Legend explains what the different symbols on a map represent
Political Map shows features such as a country's borders, capital cities and uses different colors to represent them
Physical Map shows the major physical features of a region such as mountain ranges, rivers, oceans, islands, deserts, and plains along with the elevation of the land
Thematic Map has a theme that focuses on a special topic such as climate, resources, or population. Information may be shown with different colors, arrows, dots, or other symbols
