Persian Empire A major second wave empire that stretched from Egypt to India, flourishing around 500 BCE
Athenian democracy A radical form of direct democracy in which most of the free males were able to vote in assembly and officeholders were chosen by lots
Greco-Persian War A half a century war starting 450 BCE between Greek city states and the Persian empire
Peloponnesian War The Greek civil war where Sparta defended against Athenian dominance around 430 BCE
Alexander the Great The ruler of Macedonia who unified the Greek city states over a 10 year military expedition, conquering from Egypt to India
Hellenistic Era The period 300 to 30 BCE in which Greek culture spread widely in the Middle East and India in the city states ruled by Alexander the Great
Alexandria An Egyptian city established by Hellenistic rulers, had a huge population and a major avenue for the spread of Greek culture
