| Hammurabi's Code | Laws written by Hammurabi of Babylon, etched into stone. The first known written code of laws. |
| Ziggurat | A stepped-temple in Mesopotamia for worshipping the gods |
| City-state | Cities that function as their own independent state or government |
| Scribe | A person who writes down a society's history |
| Polytheism | Belief in multiple gods |
| Akkadians | A group of Semetic people around the city of Akkad |
| Babylonians | Ancient city-state in Mesopotamia, in what is now Iraq. Hammurabi is associated with this group. |
| Assyrians | A city-state that battled often with Egypt. Developed chariots for use in battle. Is located in what is today Syria. |
| Phoenicians | A coastal culture that had contact with Ancient Greece. Their alphabet is the foundation of European alphabets. |
| Persians | Extensive empire from the Indus river to parts of Southern Europe and Africa. Iran is the epicenter. |
| Climate | Weather that is typical of an area |
| Society | A group of people with shared cultural values and a shared government |
| Resources | The natural material and man-made material available to help a society thrive. |
| Migration | When groups of people move from one place to another |
| Tools | Equipment that is used to build and make daily living easier. |
| Technology | Knowledge and skill needed to create tools and man-made materials for a society |
| Economics | Social Science that focused on the production of goods and trade so that a society can succeed |
