Directional terms, planes and regions

| Superior | Above another structure |
| Inferior | below another structure |
| Medial | middle |
| Lateral | to the side |
| Proximal | near point of attachment |
| Distal | away from point of attraction |
| Supine | flat on back |
| Prone | flat on stomach |
| Anatomical position for point of reference | standing erect, facing forward with limbs at side and palms facing forward |
| Superficial | near the surface |
| Frontal/Coronal | Imaginary line that divides body into anterior and posterior |
| Misgagittal | imaginary line that divides the body into equal right/left halves |
| Transverse | imaginary line that intersects the body horizontally, upper and lower halves |
| Sagittal/Lateral | Parallel to the median plane, divides the body into left and right sections |
| Abdominopelvic quadrants | Right upper quadrant, Left upper quadrant, right lower quadrant, Left lower quadrant, |
