Specialization of Labor 1. when people take work in jobs that require unique skill sets 2. potter, tailor, warrior, scribe, jewelry maker
What were the first permanent settlements? Farming villages
Cities 1. Developed after surpluses became common 2. the population grew beyond a town to a large community
Organized Religion developed as people began to search for their in purpose in life and to help explain why things, like storm, happened
Why did Social Classes develop? surplus food production led to the development of specialized jobs and classes based on status and wealth
Organized Gov’t. 1. Governments and city-states came about because rulers gained control over larger areas and more resources. 2. They also wanted to bring order to the cities.
Public Works projects built by the gov't to help people in a society live better lives
Public Works examples ex. roads, bridges, aqueducts, temples, arenas, baths, and sewers.
Art & Architecture Achievements of ancient civilizations
Writing Developed so farmers could keep track of crops & merchants could record sales prices
Mesopotamian writing Cuneiform
Phoenician alphabet Advantage it was easier to write than cuneiform
Effect of Phoenician alphabet Became the language of trade so reading and writing became more common
Technological advances of Stone Age people 1. Making tools out of bone and wood 2. ability to make fire - cooking, heat, safety 3. Animal skin clothes

Since there was a surplus... people could live in permanent homes
Since they were no longer hunter-gatherer nomads and had extra food... the population grew.
There were more than enough people to farm so people could develop unique skills. This is called... Specialization of Labor
Job specialization led to products being made by artisans. This led to... Trade, Wealth, & Social Classes developing
the Agricultural Revolution the ability of humans to change from nomadic hunter-gatherers to learning how to farm and domesticate animals
Agricultural Revolution aka Neolithic Revolution
Artisan A person who makes things with their hands
Trader A person who buys & sells goods
What was the impact of trade on a civilization's economy? Trading helped bring new products, ideas, & natural resources from one civilization to another civilization.
How did the Neolithic Revolution lead to job specialization? During the Neolithic (Agricultural) Revolution, food surpluses caused populations to explode and cities developed. Fewer people needed to farm, so they could do other kinds of work, such as making clothing, pottery, tools & jewelry.
