| combining vowel | vowel that links the word root to another word root or a suffix |
| combining form | consists of the word root and its combining vowel written in a word root/vowel form |
| word building | consists of putting together two or more word elements to form a variety of terms |
| abbreviations | commonly used in the medical profession as a way of saving time |
| medical record | chart documents the details of a patients hospital stay |
| Electronic Medical Record | software program allows for entering of patient information via a computer or tablet, which then organizes and stores the data |
| Pharmocology | study of the origin, characteristics, and effects of drugs |
| chemical name | describes the chemical formula or molecular structure of a particular drug |
| generic/nonproprietary name | recognized and accepted as the official name for a drug |
| brand name/proprietary name | trademark for the drug |
| prescription drug | can only be ordered by licensed healthcare practiotioners |
| prescription | written explanation to the pharmacist regarding the name of the medication, the dosage, and the times of administration |
| over-the-counter-drug | drug that does not require a prescription |
| Drug Enforcement Administration | enforces the control of these drugs |
| control substances | have a potential for being addictive or abused |
