Neolithic and River Valleys

| civilization | a form of culture characterized by cities, specialized workers, complex institutions, record keeping, and Advanced technology |
| river valleys | areas where villages and cities grew up around the rivers |
| polytheistic | the belief in more than one god |
| theocracy | the type of government in which rule is based on religious authority |
| hieroglyphics | an ancient Egyptian writing system in which pictures were used to represent ideas and sounds |
| pyramid | a massive structure with a rectangular base and four triangular sides, like those that were built in Egypt as burial places for Old Kingdom pharaohs |
| calendar | a table or register with the days of each month and week in a year |
| cultural diffusion | the spreading of ideas of products from one culture to another |
| monsoons | a wind that shifts in direction at certain times of each year |
| plumbing | the system of pipes and other apparatus for conveying water, liquid wastes |
| reincarnation | the process by which a soul is reborn continuously until it achieves perfect understanding |
| Karma | the totality of the good and bad deeds performed by a person, which is believed to determine their fate after rebirth |
| Dharma | essential quality or character, as of the cosmos or one's own nature |
| government | the form or system of rule by which a state, community, etc., is governed |
| dynasty | a sequence of rulers from the same family, stock, or group |
| silk | the soft, lustrous fiber obtained as a filament from the cocoon of the silkworm; cloth made from this fiber |

| monotheism | the doctrine or belief that there is only one God |
| covenant | an agreement between God and man |
