| feudal system | a way of organizing people during the middle ages; based on giving land to lower classes in return for protection, food, and service |
| feif | a share of land given to a vassal |
| vassal | a tenant of the lord in the feudal system |
| what the Lord gets from the feudal system | money, loyalty, military service, food, service |
| what vasals get from the feudal system | land (from the lord), food and service (from the serfs) |
| serf | peasants bound to a manor |
| what serfs get from the feudal system | land (from the lord), protection (from the vassals) |
| manor | large, self sufficient estate with farmland and sometimes a whole village |
| guild | an organization of people with a common interest |
| nation building | unification of kingdoms throughout the empire under a single government |
| charter | an agreement on rights |
| compatriot | a fellow countryman |
| clergy | religious leaders who perform religious services |
| papacy | government of the church ruled by the pope |
| excommunicated | cut off from church life |
