CNA: Boldened Steps

Review of boldened steps for all 19 CNA exam skills.

Applying An Anti-Embolic Stocking To One Leg • Leave resident with stocking that is smooth/wrinkle free.
Assist Resident To Ambulate Using A Gait Belt (Ambulate = Walk) • Lock bed brakes to ensure resident's safety. • Lock wheelchair brakes to ensure resident's safety.
Assisting Resident With The Use Of A Bedpan, Measure And Record Urine Output With Hand Washing (1/4 Mandatory) • Be within 25 ml's of the Observer's reading. • Wash hands (scrub for at least 20 seconds). • Do not re-contaminate hands during & after hand-washing.
Catheter Care For A Female Resident With Hand Washing (1/4 Mandatory Task) • Hold catheter where it exits the urethra with one hand. • Do not allow tube to be pulled at any time. • Wash hands (scrub for at least 20 seconds). • Do not re-contaminate hands during & after hand-washing.
Denture Care - Cleaning Upper or Lower Denture • Put on gloves before washing/touching dentures.
Donning Gown And Gloves, Emptying A Urinary Drainage Bag, Measure And Record Urine Output And Removing Gown and Gloves With Hand Washing (1/4 Mandatory Task) • Be within 25 ml's of the Observer's reading. • Remove PPE without touching outside of soiled gown. • Wash hands (scrub for at least 20 seconds). • Do not re-contaminate hands during & after hand-washing.
Dressing A Resident With An Affected (Weak) Side • Strip strong, wear weak.
Feeding A Dependent Resident • Position resident in a sitting position of 75 - 90 degrees. • Record percentage of solid food eaten. • Record total fluid consumed in ml's.
Foot Care On One Foot • Dry thoroughly between the toes. • No lotion in between toes (Not boldened, important).
Making An Occupied Bed • N/A
Modified Bed Bath - Face And One Arm, Hand And Underarm • No soap on face • Wash eyes inner to outer with new leaf each swipe.
Mouth Care - Brushing Resident's Teeth • Put on gloves before cleaning resident's mouth.
Nail Care One Hand • N/A • Push cuticles w/ towel (not required/not boldened).
PROM Exercises For One Hip and One Knee • Ask resident if there is pain/discomfort at least once.
PROM Exercises To One Shoulder • Ask resident if there is pain/discomfort at least once.
Perineal Care For A Female With Hand Washing (1/4 Mandatory Task) • Clean vagina front to back with new leaf each swipe. • Wash from vagina to rectal/back area. • Wash hands (scrub for at least 20 seconds). • Do no re-contaminate hands during & after hand-washing.
Positioning A Dependent Resident In Bed On Side • Ask Observer to stand on side of the bed opposite to working area (you stay on working side only).
Transfer Resident From Bed To Wheelchair Using A Gait Belt (Transfer = Pivot) • Lock bed brakes to ensure resident's safety. • Lock wheelchair brakes to ensure resident's safety.
Vital Signs: Count And Record Resident's Radial Pulse And Respirations • Record pulse rate (within 8 beats of Observer's reading). • Record respiration rate (within 4 breaths of Observer's reading).
