What type of government do both ancient Rome and the US share? a Republic
What is a Republic? >Gov’t where people vote for elected officials who govern them >Representatives are trusted to make important decisions in the best interests of the people they serve
Who was allowed to vote in Ancient Rome? Only Patrician men in the Senate could vote.
Who can vote in the United States? -Any citizen, male or female, who is 18 years old or older may vote. -Every social class can vote
What is the Philosophy of Government that both the Roman Republic and the US Republic believed in? Don’t allow 1 person, such as a monarch, to have absolute power over the gov't.
Why didn't the Romans want 1 person to have complete control? The last king of Rome, Tarquin, abused his power and was cruel to his people.
Why didn't the Founding Fathers of the United States want 1 person to have complete control? King George had been overtaxing the colonies to pay for a war with France.
What became the popular phrase during the American Revolution? "No taxation without representation."
How did both Republics separate the power of the Monarch? They divided the power of the King into three branches: 1. the Executive 2. the Legislative 3. the Judicial
Roman Republic Executive Branch Leaders -Made up of 2 Consuls who were equal and shared power. -Were elected to serve for 1 year.
United States Executive Branch Leader - the President -Vice President assists the president, but the President & V.P. do NOT share power. -They are elected to 4 year terms
Executive Branch Differences ROME: 1. 2 Consuls who shared power equally, rather than a single ruler 2. elected to a 1 year term UNITED STATES: -elects a single leader, the President, to a 4 year term. -The Vice President assists the President, but they do not share power.
What ELITE legislative body do the Roman Republic and the US Gov.'t have in common? The Senate
Why are both Senates an Elite body? Both Senates have very few members compared to their population. Rome: 300 Patricians US: 100 citizens - 2 per state
Roman Senate -Chosen based on Social Class -Only Patricians allowed in the Senate. -300 Patrician men -Served for life unless they broke the law
United States Senate -Chosen based on citizenship & age (must be at least 30) -a male or female citizen elected from any social class. -only 100 members - just 2 per state -elected to a 6 year term
Roman and US Senate Differences ROME: -Chosen by social class. -Only 200 Patricians could be in the Senate. -Senators served for life unless they broke the law. UNITED STATES: -Chosen based on citizenship & age (must be at least 30) -a male or female citizen elected from any social class. -only 100 members - just 2 per state -elected to a 6 year term
Veto to prohibit or stop certain laws and/or actions from taking place
Power of Veto Similarity Both the Roman Republic & the US Republic gave the Executive branch veto power.
Veto Differences - Roman Republic -only the two Consuls had the power to veto. -They could veto each other's proposals and the Assembly's.
Veto Differences - US Republic -only the President has the power to veto -President can veto a law proposed by Congress
