Why was World War II a turning point in modern history? Reformed governments are (mostly) same as they are today. Creation of UN & ICC. Concept of genocide, term had not yet been invented until after the war. Age of atomic weapons & bombs. Large displaced persons population in Europe
What were the major battle and actions of WWII in the European, North African, & Pacific Theaters? PT 1. Siege of Leningrad: Germany & Finland against Soviet Union. 900-day siege/blockade, cutting off water, electricity, transportation, etc. People died of starvation but the city refused to fall. Hitler became impatient & left.
What were the major battle and actions of WWII in the European, North African, & Pacific Theaters? PT 2. Pearl Harbor: America against Japan. Japanese bombers & kamikazes bombed US territory in Hawaii. Prompted US to join the war.
What were Japan's objective in WWII? Land & resources, specifically from China. Racial superiority/clarity like Germany.
What tactics did Hitler use to get rid of the Jews, both before and after the "Final Solution"? Nuremberg Laws: Stripped Jews of their rights. Kristallnacht: Jewish property destroyed, citizen-evoked violence increases Concentration & Extermination Camps: Jews rounded up, shipped to miscellaneous countries & worked to death or exterminated.
How did the Allies turn the tide of the war in both theaters? European: Opening up other fronts against Germany, many in Soviet Union. Germany forced to fight in the south-Italy, east-Soviet Union, & west-Normandy after D-Day. Pacific: Island hopping allowed US to save resources for battles more likely to win.
Describe the peace agreements made for Germany & Japan at the end of the war. How did this compare to the end of WWI? Both governments completely changed. Japan becomes constitutional monarchy, Germany split into west & east and becomes capitalist. Focused on having trials and holding leaders/citizens accountable for their atrocities.
Know these dates. Germany invades Poland: 9/1/39 Pearl Harbor: 12/7/41 D-Day: 6/6/44 VE Day: 5/8/45 VJ Day: 9/2/45
