Josef Stalin DURING Originally collaborated with Hitler until they both broke the Molotov-Ribbon Pact. Urged Britain and American forces to invade & open front in France to relieve German pressure on Soviet armies. Leading the country very important in defeating Hitler.
Josef Stalin AFTER Stayed in power until he died in 1953.
Charles de Gaulle DURING A French general who set up a government in-exile in London after France fell. Committed all his energy to reconquering France.
Charles de Gaulle AFTER Became the President of France after the war.
Winston Churchill DURING The British prime minister. Made sure that Great Britain never surrendered to Germany and continue fighting.
Winston Churchill AFTER Helped write the Atlantic Charter with Roosevelt. The basis for peace after WWII.
Franklin D. Roosevelt President of U.S. for most of the war. Secretly agreed to help the Allies. Created the New Deal to create jobs and help the economy. Declared war on Japan after Pearl Harbor. Died during the war.
Isoroku Yamamoto Japan's greatest naval strategist. Planned the attack on Pearl Harbor. Died during this as a kamikaze bomber.
Emperor Hirohito DURING Emperor of Japan. Did everything without question by the Japanese people.
Emperor Hirohito AFTER Stripped of all political power. Had to state he was not divine. A symbol to unify the people.
Douglas MacArthur DURING Commander of the Allied land forces in the Pacific. Behind the island hopping strategy. Also in charge of US occupation of Japan after their surrender.
Douglas MacArthur AFTER Impact on postwar Japanese government and constitution. Demilitarized and democratized Japan.
Erwin Rommel Nazi general who led the Afrika Corps in North Africa. Pushed the British back across the desert & seized Tobruk. This gave him the nickname "Desert fox".
Bernard Montgomery British Commander, known for successes in North Africa, beat the Nazis there. Collaborated w/ General Eisenhower.
Dwight D. Eisenhower DURING Highly respected American general. Led the Allied force in North Africa, D-Day invasion of Normandy
Dwight D. Eisenhower AFTER Becomes U.S. President after the war.
Benito Mussolini DURING Less powerful than Hitler, but went along with his anti-semitic plans. Had less control over Italian people than Hitler had over German people
Benito Mussolini AFTER Was disguised as a German soldier and Italian resistance fighters found him and shot him. Then he was hung upside down in Milan for all to see.
