Civilizing Mission The belief many imperial nations had that it was their "duty" to civilize and and convert colonized nations
Berlin Conference Meeting amongst nations that divided Africa amongst imperial nations who wanted to colonize it
Boer Wars War fought between British Colonizers and the Dutch in an effort to take control of South Africa. Many Africans also were killed by the Brits
Settler Colonies Oversea territories established by imperial nations. The British has many in New Zealand and Australia
Scramble for Africa The race to colonize Africa and its resources by imperial nations
Manifest Destiny A belief held by Americans that it was their duty to spread democracy and freedom into other territories
Russian Expansion Circ. 19th Century Expanded into neighboring territories such as Siberia, expanded both in the south and west.
Pan-Slavism Idea held by Russians that Russia should unite all Slavic people to live under one country
Imperialism in Japan circa 19th Century Due to Meiji Restoration, Japan was able to expand into Korea, Manchuria, and other parts of China/Asia
Economic Imperialism Extending control over another country through economic means
Opium Wars Two wars fought between Imperial Britain and China. Fought because China did not want addictive drugs to be sold to their people
Treaty of Nanjing Unfair treaty that further developed the British sphere of influence in China by allowing Britain to open up more sea ports
Taiping Rebellion Large scale rebellion against the Qing dynasty and the foreigners that were in the nation
United Fruit Company Company ran by an American that built infrastructure in Latin America in exchange for large amounts of land to expand their business.
Export Economy Economy that survives by exporting most of their commodities
Examples of Export Economies Britain forcing India to grow cotton West African countries forced to export palm oil for factories
Irish Potato Famine Event in the 1840s that caused millions to starve and eventually migrate, changing the demographics of many major American cities
Convict Labor Form of coerced labor in which criminals were sent to Penal Colonies to work
Ethnic Enclaves Pockets of ethnic immigrants who lived in the same town/neighborhood
Chinese Exclusion Act Legislative act in America passed to limit the amount of Chinese immigrants coming into America
Yaa Asantewaa War War between the Asante Kingdom and Britain who was trying to colonize them, industrial weaponry would eventually lead to British victory
Cherokee Nation Indigenous group of people in America who were forced to relocate and attempted to retain their culture by creating their own government
Zulu Kingdom Kingdom that created a new state right at the dawn of the British empire, would retain independence for a prolonged amount of time
Xhosa Cattle Killing Movement Movement in which South Africans killed their cattle hoping they would rise up again stronger than before, instead they faced increased rates of famine
