Mesoamerica | Region extending across southern Mexico and most of Central America that was the home of the Olmecs, Zapotecs, Mayas, and Aztecs |
Maize | Corn that was originally grown in Mesoamerica. The basis of the Native American Diet. |
Slash-and-Burn Agriculture | Farming technique in which plants in a given area are cut down and burned to fertilize the soil for future use. |
The Olmecs | One of the first civilizations in the Americas that was located near the Gulf of Mexico and was known for a large trading network and colossal head sculptures. |
Observatory | Building designed to study the sky and outer space. |
The Mayas | Civilization in Modern-day Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, and Southern Mexico known for their architecture and layout of their cities, expansive food production, and their 365 Day calendar. |
Chichen Itza | Former Mayan city and archeological site in the Yucatan Peninsula featuring a famous pyramid known as El Castillo. |
Yucatan Peninsula | Piece of land occupied by the Mayans, which is in parts of present-day Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize and separates the Caribbean Sea from the Gulf of Mexico. |
Obsidian | Black and sharp volcanic rock that was traded throughout the Mayan civilization. |
The Aztecs | Civilization and empire in central Mexico that transformed the landscape of Lake Texcoco, conquered nearby groups, and created a successful economy. |
Chinampas | Artificial (man-made) or floating gardens built by the Aztecs. |
Tenochtitlan | Capital city and religious headquarters of the Aztec Empire. |
Moctezuma | Aztec emperor who increased the power of the government and ruled over much of Mexico at the time the Spanish arrival but was eventually imprisoned and killed by the Spanish. |
The Incas | South American empire famous for building a network of roads and rope bridges, terraces, and the ancient city of Machu Picchu. |
Andes Mountains | Rocky and steep mountain range located along the western part of South America that was home to the Chavin and the Inca. |
Machu Picchu | Incan settlement located in the Andes Mountains that was called the Lost city of the Incas , and may have been used by Emperor Pachacuti (Unified the Incas) |
Terraces | Flattened sections of land along mountain slopes that are used to grow crops in uneven areas. |
