A Breakdown Of John's Gospel & The Lenten Scrutinies

Prologue: Info? a poem used by early Christians as a song, full of symbolic language, added to the bible, was not originally part of the gospel.
Prologue: Key Events? Jesus is introduced: Divine Son, Word made flesh, light of the world, and John the Baptist preparing everyone
Prologue: Message? Jesus was with God from the beginning of creation and everything shows he is divine.
BOOK OF SIGNS: Info? shows all 7 signs to show that He is the Messiah. Synoptic Gospels show miracles performed, but John shows that a conversion of heart is needed to have faith and believe in God.
BOOK OF SIGNS: Events? water into wine at Cana, royal official's son healed, healing of a man at Bethesda, loaves and fish, walking on water, man born blind, raising of Lazarus
BOOK OF SIGNS: What it shows? JC can do all things as God, but to see them requires conversion of heart to follow him with Faith
BOOK OF GLORY: Info? JC final days are shown with glory even in His suffering. He is glorious even as he suffers a human death HIS FULL GLORY IS REVEALED WHEN HE IS LIFTED FROM THE CROSS
BOOK OF GLORY: key events? last supper, prayer in garden, trial, crucifixion, death, resurrection, JC invites Thomas and Mary Magdalene back to faith
BOOK OF GLORY: What does this show Christians? Saving action through the resurrection JC's glory shines through suffering and death
EPILOGUE: what language was it originally written in? Greek
EPILOGUE: Events? 40 days between resurrection and ascension. The road to Emmaus, Peter rehabbed as a disciple, Peter knows he's forgiven, Thomas doubts and sees, fishing on the other side of the boat
EPILOGUE: What it shows us Christians? We will always be forgiven if we seek forgiveness, JC is always present even when he's not

what does the name Jesus mean? the name means God saves
What do the Jesus "I AM" statements mean? teach us about who he is and how he relates God to us, how he brings us to God for salvation.
Jesus "I AM" statements and meanings Bread of life- we are fed in the Eucharist Light of the world- we are never in darkness with Jesus The Gate- we must go through Jesus to get to God Good shepherd- he's watching out for us and risking himself for us
Jesus "I AM" statement- last one Vine and we are branches- we must remain connected to him to live
Bread of Life Discourse- chapter 6 summary? Feeds 5,000 people- sets up for the apostles how He will be the spiritual food and sacrifice for us walking on water- shows us that we need to have faith to step out and follow... don't forget Peter, he falls seek Jesus- they want to be part of feast
