drugs used to treat disorders of the musculoskeletal system are classified as skeletal muscle relaxants & NSAIDs
structural defect of the musculoskeletal system ruptured disk
some disorders of the musculoskeletal system require __ intervention rather than medication surgical
musculoskeletal system disorders associated w/pain, spasm, abnormal contraction, or impaired mobility do respond to skeletal muscle relaxants
backaches & neck strains are treated w/combination of muscle relaxants, PT, & mild __ analgesics
muscle relaxants are given on a short-term basis
most muscle relaxant drugs affect the spinal cord & brain
most muscle relaxant drugs have no direct effect on skeletal muscles
reduces muscle spasm, causes alterations in perception of pain, & produces sedative effect, promoting rest & relaxation of affected part resulting actions of muscle relaxant drugs
used to treat acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions diazepam (Valium) & methocarbamol (Robaxin)
different kind of muscle relaxant causing direct effect of skeletal muscles & used in treatment of spasticity resulting from upper motor neuron disorders (MS, or cerebral palsy) dantrolene

used to treat disorders in which musculoskeletal system is not functioning properly due to inflammation anti-inflammatory drugs
arthritis, bursitis, spondylitis, gout & muscle strains conditions treated w/anti-inflammatory drugs
corticosteroids are not used for extended periods time because of serious side effects
frequently given for lengthy periods of time in maintenance doses as low as possible NSAIDs

medications should be taken w/meals/milk to reduce GI side effects; enteric-coated, timed-release caps/buffered aspirin also recommended to reduce gastric irritation non-selective NSAIDs
NSAIDs potentiate possibility of GI bleeding is considered an interaction with alcohol
NSAIDs potentiate possibility of bleeding when taken with anticoagulants or vitamin E
NSAIDs potentiate hyperglycemia when taken with sulfonylureas
NSAIDs increase GI effects when taken with __ for prolonged administration of NSAIDs corticosteroids
__ + NSAIDs = increased GI effects aspirin
when aspirin is taken w/NSAIDs it will __ GI risk reducing effects of COX-2 diminish
NSAIDs cause attenuated (lessens) response when taken with antihypertensives
NSAIDs decrease clearance when taken taken with lithium
NSAIDs potentiate & increase risk of toxicity from, when taken with methotrexate
__ action is antagonized by salicylates, NSAID interaction uricosurics (Benemid/Anturane)

__ or __ __ of NSAIDs for those w/cardio disorders, such as hypertension or CHF contraindication or extreme caution
contraindication/extreme caution of __ __ for those w/kidney/thyroid disease, liver dysfunction, GERD, & history of GI bleed/IBD NSAID use
contraindication/extreme caution of NSAID use for those w/blood dyscrasias, especially __ __ or __ clotting disorders; anemia
NSAIDs pose a danger to children w/viral infections, due to possibility of Reye's syndrome with salicylates
contraindication/extreme caution for those with __ hypersensitivity; they should not taken Celebrex sulfonamide
metabolic disorder characterized by accumulation of uric acid crystals in various joints, especially big toe, knee, & elbow w/resultant pain/swelling gout
rash, GI upset, diarrhea, and blood disorders are __ __of gout medications side effects
encouraging large fluid intake, for those on gout meds, facilitates __ of uric acid crystals excretion
patients should be instructed to DC NSAIDs 10-14 days __ of any kind, to reduce risk of __ __ surgery; serious bleeding
disease characterizes by low bone mass & deterioration of bone tissues; leads to bone fragility & > susceptibility to fracture osteoporosis
osteoporosis means porous bone
includes several prescription meds treatment of osteoporosis
recommended for post-menopausal __ __ osteoporosis prevention
