AABB (American Association of Blood Banks) is an international organization that develops standards and provides educational and accreditation programs that focus on enhancing patient and donor care and safety.
ACT Activated clotting time also called (Activated Coagulation Time)
Autologous Donation Donating blood for one's own use
BAC Blood alcohol concentration, (test on an individual who has been involved in a traffic accident.)
Compatibility Ability to be favorably mixed together
agglutination clumping of the RBCs within the patient’s circulatory system.
lysis rupturing of the RBCs within the patient’s circulatory system.
Lookback is the tracing and testing of blood donors and recipients when a blood product has been determined to be potentially contaminated with a bloodborne pathogen
Bacteremia (bacteria in the blood) A blood infection
septicemia microorganisms or their toxins in the blood.
Sepsis is an overwhelming, unregulated response by the body to the blood infection that triggers inflammatory responses throughout the body that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death.
Fever of unknown origin (FUO) a persistent fever with no obvious cause, has long been recognized as an indication of septicemia.
Blood culture specimens are most commonly collected in special bottles containing nutrient broth referred to as medium that encourages the growth of microorganisms. These specimens are typically collected in sets of two: one AEROBIC (with air) and one ANAEROBIC (without aire ).
ETOH Abbreviation for ethanol
ARD (antimicrobial removal device) Blood culture bottle containing a resin that removes antimicrobials (antibiotics) from a blood specimen.
FAN (Fastidious antimicrobial neutralization) Blood culture bottle that contains activated charcoal that neutralizes antibiotics in a blood specimen.
