Directional terms, Planes and Cavaties
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Superior or Cranial | toward the head, upper |
| Inferior or Caudal | away from head, lower |
| Anterior or Ventral | front |
| Posterior or Dorsal | back |
| Medial | toward the midline of the body |
| Lateral | away from the midline of the body (side) |
| Proximal | toward or nearest the trunk or the point of origin of a part |
| Distal | away from or farthest from the trunk or point of origin of a part |
| Coronal Plane (Frontal) | vertical plane running from side to side, anterior and posterior, front or back |
| Sagittal Plane (Lateral) | vertical plane running from front to back, right and left |
| Axial Plane (Transverse) | horizontal plane, upper and lower, superior and inferior, cranial and caudal |
| Dorsal Cavity | back (cranial cavity and spinal cavity) |
| Ventral Cavity | front (thoracic cavity, abdominal cavity and pelvic cavity) |
| Cranial Cavity | head containing the brain |
| Spinal Cavity | vertebral containing the spinal cord |
| Thoracic Cavity | chest containing the heart, lungs, esophagus, trachea, etc. |
| Abdominal Cavity | stomach containing the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, liver, etc. |
| Pelvic Cavity | hips containing the urogenital system, rectum, etc. |
