| reference lab | the laboratory that receives a specimen from another laboratory and that performs one or more tests on such specimen |
| STAT | Tests that are required within the hour |
| chain of custody | form needed to show person(s) that handled a specimen for court |
| Delta check | checking patients previous results to make a comparison or to confirm the validity of result |
| hemolysis | the destruction of RBC's / the breaking down of RBC's |
| additive to blood ratio | not filling tubes to tube capacity especially when there are additives in tube can cause this |
| aerosols | fine mist that may exit upon opening tubes due to vacuum pressure |
| aliquoting | separating sample out to other containers for testing |
| autoantibodies | An antibody made against substances formed by a person's own body |
| Centrifuge | spinning of a specimen to separate liquid portion from heavier components |
| chain of custody | form signed off on to show who handled the specimen especially a sample that is needed for a court case |
| Cold aglutinins | a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by the premature destruction of red blood cells and needs to be kept at 37c after collection |
| glycolysis | A process in which glucose (sugar) is partially broken down by cells in enzyme reactions that do not need oxygen |
| Icteric or Icterus | after spinning specimen the liquid portion is dark yellow-green due to the build of bilirubin |
| protected from the light | bilirubin, beta carotene, & vitamin B-6 needs this special handling after collection |
| Lipemic or Lipemia | after centrifuge this specimens liquid portion is cloudy and/or thicker plasma consistency |
| Pneumatic tube syystem | this system is used to send specimens for the lab to the reference lab by using vacuum |
| Pre-exam | not collecting tubes in the right order of draw, inverting vigorously and wrong patient identification are some of the things that could go wrong during which phase of testing |
