1215 King John signs the Magna Carta, forever limiting the power of English kings.
1492 Christopher Columbus discovers the New World while working for the Spanish king and queen
1588 The Spanish Armada is lost. Spain will never again be the most powerful country in Europe.
1607 Jamestown, the first permanent English colony on North America, is founded.
1619 The first black African slaves are sold to the English colonists in North America.
1776 The Declaration of Independence is signed. The United States becomes a separate nation.
