The effects modernization had on countries in Europe, Asia and Africa

What did Napoleon's Rhine Confederation do to Germany? It was supposed to give the serfs freedom, give them easy trade and give Jews more rights.
What was the Zollverein in Prussia and what did they do? They were the economic group and they ended taxes between the many German states.
Who was Otto Von Bismark? He was originally part of Junker class(landowning nobles) but became the Chancellor or Prime Minister of Prussia by King William I
What were Otto Von Bismark's accomplishments? He set up realpolitik(normal politics that depended on what the state needed), Strengthened army using "blood and iron" speech to boost nationalism, and won the German states so he could help them set up their own country
What were the main points of the Franco-Prussian war? Bismark tricked France into declaring war on Prussia, so Prussia and Germany crushed France
What did Bismark's two-house legislature do? The Bundersrat, or upper class, appointed rulers for Germany state and Reichstag, or lower house, were citizen men. However the upper house could veto the lower classes laws.
What was special about Germany's modernization? They became second to England quickly and they were the first to apply science to the factory business.
What did Bismark use Kulturkampf and what is it? It was used to make the Catholics loyal to Germany rather than the Pope in Rome but, it didn't work.
What was the main purpose of the Social Democratic Party? Marxists who wanted Parliament to help the working class, but instead any source of socialist ideas were banned and they were bribed with working benefits(health care, ect.) again it didn't work.
Why was Kaiser William II important? He used social welfare which made public transportation and electricity cheap while public schools taught obedience, reading, writing and math.
What did Giuseppe Garbaldi do in Italy? He tried to get rid of Cavour, the prime minister of Sardinia, by bringing 1,000 volunteers in red shirts with provided weapons to rebel.
What was the result of Garbaldi's rebellion? Sardinian soldiers went to stop it but instead took Naples, one of the last parts they didn't have, so Italy was first united since Ancient Rome.
What were the divisions between the North and South in Italy and what did people do about them? North was rich in business and south was slums. The socialists striked and the anarchists were violent.
Why was the Pope upset about the new Italy? They only had room for Vatican and they felt disgraced.
Why did emigrants begin to leave Italy? Tension when southerners moved to north for factory jobs and no say in government. Felt trapped.
What did Francis Deak do to Austria-Hungary? He had a dual monarchy where Austria had an emperor but Hungary had a king(Francis Joseph) which allowed them to only share finance, defense and foreign affairs.
What was a problem in Austria that created division? Czechs, Slovaks, Poles, Ukrainians, Romanians, Serbs, Croats, Slovenes and Italians lived there too.
What were Alexander I's accomplishments in Russia? He was open to liberal ideas- freeing serfs and giving people a good education- But he died before he could follow this so Decemberist Revolt had army officers asking for liberal changes.
What were Nicholas I's accomplishments in Russia? He stopped the rebellions and banned the liberal books. He used to spies and sent liberals to mental hospitals or exiled in Siberia.
What were Nicholas I's three pillars? Said "Orthodoxy"(unity between Russian Orthodox Church and gvmt), "Autocracy"(state has absolute power) and "Nationalism"(100% loyal to country)
What were Alexander II's accomplishments in Russia? He freed the serfs(emancipation) and allowed them to buy land(but they didn't have money and land was small or scarce). He also used Zemstvuos to address road repairs, schools and agriculture.
What type of gvmt did Alexander II use? Self-government which used a trial with jury and soldiers had shorter terms.
What happened to Alexander II? People's Will tried killed officials and eventually threw a bomb at his carriage. He died and was known as "czar emancipator"
What were Alexander III's accomplishments in Russia? He enforced secret police even more(revenge for father's death), tried to make everybody 100% Russian. He also used pogroms or violent attacks on Jews.
