What traditions is Bhangra associated with? South Asian diaspora in Great Britain and North America.
Where are the historical roots of Bhangra? In the Punjab region of South Asia.
Dohl Drum Two-headed, made of mango wood, played with a mallet.
Jhummar (Traditional bhangra rhythm) bugdu (monochord- string), algoza (double flute- circular breathing), and chimta (idiophone). Function is to accompany dancing at night during rainy season along river banks and for Sufi ceremonies; incorporated into bhangra after independence (1947).
Aao Nachiye ("Come Let's Dance") Sangeet Group. Instruments: dhol, dholaki (small dhol), chimta (idiophone- iron strip with metal disks).
Tumbi One stringed instrument popular in bhangra.
Where/when did the tango originate? In the slums of Buenos Aires in the late 19th century where Argentinean gaucho (cowboy) and African influences joined with the creativity of European immigrants.
La Cumparsita (Tango) Composed by Gerardo Matos Rodrigues in 1917. Classic orchestral tango. Tango-romanza. 2 bandoneones, 2 violins, piano, and bass.

Adios Nonino (new tango) Composed by Astor Piazzolla in 1959. Performed by Quinteto Tango Nuevo (Astor on bandoneon). Performed in a concert hall, combining aspects of traditional tango dance music, western concert music, and jazz.
Melody for Mahakala (Tibetan chant) Performed by Gyuto monks of the Gyuto Tantric college, India. Chant for a ceremony dedicated to the deity of Mahakala. Instrumental- rol mo.
Chango (toque from a Santeria service) Eya Aranla (Milton Cardona's ensemble). A toque to call out the orisha chango at a santeria bembe. 3 bata drums: iya (mother drums with brass bells), iotele, and okonkola.
Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika (South African Hymn) Congregation of St. Paul's church in Soweto. Hymn. Religious text and harmonies reflecting the religious missions. Different languages and singing tradtions.
The New South African National Anthem Composed by Edmund Bourne and John Hendricks. Based on Nkosi... and Die Stem van Suid Afrika (The Call of South Africa). Perfored by The Kuumba Singers. First 2 verses sung in indigenous languages Zulu and Sesotho. Last 2 sung in Afrikaans and English
Get Up, Stand Up (reggae) Composed by Peter Tosh (vocals, guitar, and keyboard). Electronic organ. References to the Tenets of the Rastafarian religion, opposite to Christianity (blaming Christians ) which sought to reclaim black pride through a return to africa.
Dastgah of Homayoun (Persian music for ney) Hassan Kassayi (ney). Gushe- melodic pattern is called shushtari.
Concerto for Flute and Orchestra Composed by Reza Vali. Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Alberto Almarza (Flute), Gil Rose (Conductor). Soloist plays and hums. Percussion includes the darabukkah (hourglass shaped middle east drum)

What are Cajuns? a more homogeneous group of people who came from a community of French refugees in Acadia.
