The Middle Ages

Here is a set of terms that you should study for the Middle Ages.

TermDefinition
Chivalry The code by which knights pledged to live. It revolved around honor, courage and protecting the weak.
Bishop A religious leader who was often the top church leader in a kingdom.
Guild A group of craftsmen that focused on a specific trade or craft.
Byzantine Empire Eastern half of the Roman Empire that was one of the strongest European empires during the Middle Ages.
Apprentice A boy who trained with a guild master in order to learn a trade or craft.
Charlemagne King of the Franks and the First Holy Roman Empire.
King The ruler in a monarchy.
Crusades Religious conflicts between Christians and Muslims for control of the Holy Land.
Feudal System A system of government where the king gave land to his lords and barons for loyalty and military service at times of war.
Fief The area of land given to a lord or baron by a king to rule and manage.
Black Death The devastating disease that spread throughout Europe during the Middle Ages.
Kievan Rus An empire founded by Vikings in the city of Kiev or modern-day Russia.
Magna Carta A document that nobles forced upon King John of England. It said that people had the right to a fair trial and the King was not above the law.
Vikings A warrior people who came from Scandinavia and raided many countries in Northern Europe.
Manor The local lords house or castle - it was the center of life during the Middle Ages.
Vassal A person who pledges (swore) their loyalty to a lord.
Knight A warrior who rode a horse and wore heavy metal armor. Knights served the king and were granted land for their service.
Serf A peasant who maintained the land for a local lord.
Castle A defensive fortification where a lord or king would live at the center of a Kingdom.
Franks The Germanic tribes who settled in the land that today is France.
