Honors World

TermDefinition
Government The institution through which a society makes and enforces its public policies
Society When people live together in a more or less ordered community
Democracy Power is in the hands of the people who vote directly or indirectly for their government & laws
Republic Power is in the hands of citizens who vote for representatives who run the government
Authoritarian A government in which one leader or group of people holds absolute power.
Monarchy Government run by a king or queen
Dictatorship A form of government in which one ruler has absolute control (not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition, etc.)
Oligarchy A government ruled by a few powerful people.
Theocracy A system of government in which priests rule in the name of God or a god.
Anarchy absence of government.
Consensus: General agreement
Citizen A person with certain rights and responsibilities in his or her country or community
Divine Right to Rule Belief that a ruler’s authority comes directly from god.
Rights: Powers or privileges granted to people either by an agreement among themselves or by law
Civil Rights People’s rights under a government
Criminal Rights: People’s rights in the criminal justice system (accused of a crime)
Bill of Rights: First 10 amendments to the US constitution
Executive Branch: The branch of government that enforces the laws (president)
Judicial Branch The branch of government that interprets laws (courts)
Legislative branch The branch of government that makes laws (US congress: House of Representatives and Senate)
Separation of Powers: Division of power between branches of government so that no part of the government has too much power.
Checks and Balances: A system that allows each branch of government to limit the powers of the other branches in order to prevent abuse of power.
Federal: The national or central government
Constitution The document that spells out how the government is organized and will function.
Federalism: A system in which power is divided between the national & state governments
