Cataracts | a large waterfall; any strong flood or rush of water. |
Pyramid | A huge building with four sloping triangular-shaped sides; built as royal tombs in Egypt. |
Great Sphinx | Built to honor Khafre and came to symbolize pharaohs’ god-given right to rule. |
Quarry | A large, deep pit where stones could be taken from and used to build structures. |
Great Pyramid | The tallest of Egyptian pyramids. |

Hieroglyphics | Picture-like symbols used as writing |
Hieratic | A shorthand version of hieroglyphics. Used by scribes |
Demotic | A faster style of hieroglyphic writing used for everyday purposes. |
Rosetta Stone | Stone found in the Egyptian city of Rosetta in 1800 C.E. Allowed archaeologists to decipher and understand hieroglyphics. |
J.F. Champollion | An archaeologist who discovered hieroglyphics stood for a single sound or idea. |
Cartouche | an oval enclosing a group of Egyptian hieroglyphs, typically representing the name and title of a ruler/leader. It was written on tombs and coffins to mark which pharaoh was buried inside and to help their souls find their way back to the body and to move on to the next life |
After life | a belief the Egyptians had about life after death. |
Pharaoh | King or Queen of Egypt that had absolute power over all the people. |
Double Crown | the symbol that represented the uniting of lower and upper Egypt. |
Absolute power | complete control over someone or something. |
Dynasty | series of rulers from the same family or ethnic group. |
Middle Class | Merchants (traders) and skilled workers (artisans). |
Upper Class | Small group of people including priests, members of pharaoh’s court (government officials), and nobles that owned large lands. |
Peasants | he most important class that did farm labor (farmers) and built roads and pyramids. |
Slaves | Prisoners captured that did manual labor and were lowest class (had some rights). |
Mummy | A dead body preserved in lifelike condition. |
